Clinical Tuesday

NEW! Tuesday June 30, 2020 @ 12:15 PM CDT - Managing Diabetes Through COVID-19

Presented by Mary Ann Hodorowicz, RDN, CDCES, CEC, MBA, will present on how primary care clinicians are managing diabetes through the COVID-19 crisis.  Moderated by Nichole MIrocha, DO, MS

After participating, learners will be able to:
o   list the top strategies for increasing access to and utilization of DSMES, as provided in the recent consensus report
o   make plans for how to optimize referrals to DSMES in their practice
o   create a process in the office to ensure that Medicare requirements for DSMT referrals are met
o   outline Medicare structures for DSMT benefits (hours, beneficiary eligibility, etc.) in the initial and follow-up visits.

A consensus report detailing strategies for increasing access to and utilization of diabetes self-management education and support was released by the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists, in collaboration with the AAFP and other organizations.  https://www.aafp.org/news/health-of-the-public/20200609diabetesconsensusrpt.html

A key component of diabetes care is diabetes self-management education and support, or DSMES, which empowers patients to select methods of care that best match their specific needs. To increase awareness of DSMES, the AAFP has joined with several other health care and diabetes organizations to release a consensus report (journals.sagepub.com) on its use in adults with type 2 diabetes. The report offers FPs and other clinicians a wealth of guidance on the most effective ways to provide DSMES to patients and help them gain access to DSMES services

Ms. Hodorowicz is a consultant, speaker, author and spokesperson specializing in Diabetes Care and Education, Nutrition, Health Promotion and Insurance Reimbursement.  Nichole Mirocha, DO, MS, is Associate Professor in SIU's Department of Family and Community Medicine and the SIU Springfield Osteopathic Residency Program Director.

NEW! Tuesday July 21 @ 8:00 PM CT - Caring for stroke patients during COVID-19

Shakeel Chowdhry, MD, neurosurgeon from NorthShore University will present on the challenges of caring for stroke patients during COVID-19.  Noorain Akhtar, MD, IAFP officer, will be the moderator.

In recent weeks, it has been reported that patients are delaying visits to the emergency department, out of fear of safety concerns related to COVID-19. Many are avoiding or delaying visits to the ED when experiencing obvious emergencies, such as stroke, only to worsen their outcomes. Family physicians may be the first point of contact for patients who want to avoid the ER, despite experiencing initial symptoms of stroke.

Shakeel Chowdhry, MD, neurosurgeon, NorthShore Neurological Institute, is urging family physicians to communicate these concerns with their patients, and reinforce the need to go to the ER rather than wait. However, if family physicians are seeing patients who have waited to contact them – even a few days after initial symptoms presented – not all hope is lost. There have been some recent advances in the treatment of stroke, which might interest your members as they are determining immediate next steps for stroke patients.

Dr. Chowdhry is with the NorthShore Neurological Institute.  He graduated from Georgetown Medical School and completed his residency at Case Western Reserve. His fellowship was at Barrow Neurological Institute.  Noorain Akhtar, MD, graduated from St. James Medical School, and competed her family medicine residency at Swedish Covenant, Chicago.  Her fellowship in biochemistry and molecular genetics was at University of Illinois at Chicago.
