AAFP National Conference highlights
Illinois' strong presence was felt throughout AAFP National Conference of Medical Students and Family Medicine Residents August 2-4 in Kansas City. With 25 Family Medicine Residency programs plus OSF Healthcare and SSM Hospitals collaborating in one big Illinois Block Party, students got a glimpse of all the great things going on in Illinois. IAFP's own Kristina Dakis, MD served as the Chair of the Resident Congress, shepherding the resident advocacy and governance from opening gavel to closing actions.

Congratulations to Michelle Byrne, MD, MPH, from Northwestern-McGaw Erie Humboldt Park residency, who was elected as the Resident Member of the AAFP board of directors. She will be installed at the AAFP Congress of Delegates, October 7-10 in New Orleans.

New law aims to ease liability concerns around providing EpiPens to police

Health care providers won't have to worry about liability when police officers use a prescribed medical device designed to counteract deadly allergic reactions under a new law signed by Gov. Bruce Rauner Tuesday. The law protects prescribing medical professionals from civil or professional liability when police uses epinephrine auto-injectors like EpiPens to counteract anaphylaxis, a severe and sometimes deadly allergic reaction. It also clarifies protections already provided to police officers. (From HealthNews Illinois - August 1, 2018)

REPEAT: Tell your story to Congress about Opioid Crisis

In late June, the House of Representatives advanced a large, comprehensive bill, the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act (HR 6). The U.S. Senate will move its own proposals soon. Legislators need to better understand that family physicians play an important role in addressing the opioids crisis. To facilitate this, the AAFP has launched a storytelling project to learn about the challenges physicians face and hear recommendations for addressing the opioid crisis in their communities. The storytelling project will run through the end of August.
