State Update
Senate Bill 189, eliminating the criminal statutes of limitations for child sexual assault and felony child sexual abuse and supported by IAFP, was signed into law on August 11th. Public Act 100-0080 went into immediate effect.
IAFP sent a letter to the Governor asking him to sign HB3502, which was signed into law on August 18. The new law creates the Advisory Council on Early Identification and Treatment of Mental Health Conditions within the Department of Public Health. The Advisory Council shall: review and identify evidence-based best practice models and promising practices supported by peer-reviewed literature being implemented in this State and other states on regular screening and early identification of mental health and substance use conditions in children and young adults, including depression, bi-polar disorder, schizophrenia, and other similar conditions, beginning at the age endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, through young adulthood, irrespective of coverage by public or private health insurance, resulting in early treatment and develop a set of recommendations and an action plan to address the barriers to early and regular screening and identification of mental health conditions in children, adolescents and young adults in Illinois.
Federal Update
Teaching Health Center legislation introduced
A bi-partisan and bi-coastal group of U.S. Representatives introduced the Training the Next Generation of Primary Care Doctors Act of 2017 (HR 3394) to reauthorize the Teaching Health Center Graduate Medical Education (THCGME) Program for three years. This legislation will also allow for the expansion of new programs within existing centers and the creation of entirely new teaching health centers while emphasizing the importance of establishing sustainable funding. Illinois Representatives Janice Schakowsky, Danny Davis and Bobby Rush are co-sponsors. Contact your U.S. Representative and urge support. If we do not take action, this important program will expire on September 30, 2017! Tell your legislators to reauthorize the Teaching Health Center GME program by sending a pre-written letter from AAFP Speak Out.

August is National Immunization Awareness month
Some parents still remain hesitant on vaccinating their children. IDPH has recently released a toolkit that helps to address these issues.
The toolkit includes:
- Health Care Provider Commitment for Exam Room - this should be printed and displayed in exam rooms. Providers have the opportunity to add their signatures/pictures to the template to attest that they are partnering with IDPH to vaccinate Illinois children.
- Immunization Infographic - can be used online - on websites or social media - and/or printed for exam rooms
- CDC Fact Sheet on Vaccine Hesitancy (for health care providers)
- Immunization Action Coalition's Top 10 Reasons to Vaccine Your Child - English and Spanish
Illinois Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System
Did you know you can access statistical analyses of data on the health behaviors of new mothers on the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) website? The IDPH Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) population-based survey is conducted among women who reside in Illinois and had a live birth in the past two to six months. You can help PRAMS staff keep survey response rates high by displaying PRAMS posters and offering brochures in clinics and exam rooms. New moms who see this information when accessing care for their infant may be inclined to respond if selected for the survey. Learn more here

 IAFP student board member Sean McClellan of Rush Medical College has been selected as one of only six Pisacano Scholars from across the country. The scholarships are awarded to students attending U.S. medical schools who demonstrate a strong commitment to the specialty of Family Medicine. In addition, each applicant must show demonstrable leadership skills, superior academic achievement, strong communication skills, identifiable character and integrity, and a noteworthy level of community service. At Rush, Sean has been involved with the Latino Medical Students Association, Family Medicine Leads Emerging Leaders Institute and the IAFP Government Relations committee.
An August 21 story in the Springfield State Journal Register about the Integrated Wellness Clinic featured the medical director, IAFP member Cynthia Thomas, MD. The clinic provides behavioral health services in the primary care medical home to those with mental illness.
IAFP Resident Board member Kristina Dakis, MD was featured on "The Happy Doc" podcast this week, sharing her story and relaying her work in overcoming burnout and pursuing wellness in the face of personal and professional challenges. From starting a wellness program at UIC School of Medicine, to public speaking and research with Family Medicine for America's Health.
