 ISMIE Mutual Insurance Company's inaugural Risk Management Symposium
A Physician-First Approach to Patient-Centered Care - is a daylong conference taking place November 10 in Oak Brook, Illinois. The symposium features ten industry thought leaders and innovators in health care who will discuss practical ways physicians can improve their patients' experience by addressing patient safety, quality, health IT, physician burnout, and diagnostic error. Speakers will use case studies, statistics, anecdotes, and scientific research to introduce new concepts and techniques - and attendees can select which breakout sessions to attend, allowing them to personalize the experience so it has the most relevance to themselves and their practice.

October 22 is Prescription Take Back Day
The Illinois State Medical Society has a toolkit for patients and physicians at https://www.isms.org/take-back. ISMS offers these resources for physicians and their practice teams to share with patients so unused prescription and over-the-counter medications can be disposed of safely. You can download a flyer to share with patients or post in your offices.

ABFM Update
The Self Assessment Module (SAM) used to be comprised of two sections: the 60-question knowledge assessment and the clinical simulation. Based on data compiled from your comments and feedback over the last several years, the ABFM decided earlier this year to split the SAMs into two separate activities. Now, the Knowledge Self-Assessment 60 questions will be the minimum required self-assessment activity. The clinical simulation, now known as the Clinical Self-Assessment, will still be available as an option, but not required to fulfill the 50-point minimum per 3-year Stage. Congratulations to Elise Duwe, a 4th-year medical student at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Urbana-Champaign, and now a 2016 Pisacano Scholar.. The scholarships, valued up to $28,000 each, are awarded to students attending U.S. medical schools who demonstrate a strong commitment to family medicine. In addition, each applicant must show demonstrable leadership skills, superior academic achievement, strong communication skills, identifiable character and integrity, and a noteworthy level of community service. Earlier this year Elise completed a PhD in Sociology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and has been a frequent presenter and attendee at Family Medicine Midwest.
Gregg Davis, MD of Princeton received the Illinois Rural Health Association's 2016 "Physician of Excellence" Award. In addition to having his own practice, Dr. Davis also serves as the chief medical officer for the Illinois Rural Community Care Organization (IRCCO), a newly-formed Accountable Care Organization established and managed by ICAHN. IRCCO is a collaborative of committed rural hospitals, including 21 Illinois critical access hospitals, clinics, physicians, and other providers who recognize certain health care and social services are best delivered and supported at the local level, and that innovation and sharing of resources, as well as talent, will guide providers to build clinically integrated systems of care, placing special effort to ensure that the patient is the center of all services.
