Wednesday, February 13, 2019, 8:30 AM - 9:30 AM CDT
Category: Live Meetings/Events

Seven states and the District of Columbia currently authorize the practice of medical aid in dying by which a terminally ill adult may ask for and receive a prescription medication for a peaceful death. Compassion & Choices Medical Director, David R. Grube, M.D., retired after 35 years practicing family medicine in rural Oregon, will share his personal, professional and clinical experience with implementation of Oregon's now twenty-year-old Death with Dignity law, including writing prescriptions for patients and integrating medical aid in dying into hospice care. He will also discuss the ethics of end-of-life care from the perspective of patients, health professionals and health care organizations.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this activity practitioners will be able to:
1. Describe the clinical competencies necessary for participating in medical aid in dying and the requirements of aid-in-dying laws
2. Address barriers to implementation and interface with hospice care
3. Explain the importance of appropriate terminology
4. Discuss ethical perspectives concerning end-of-life options
