June 9, 2020 @ 8pm CT - Exercising Active Advice Amid the COVID-19 Quarantine

Exercising Active Advice Amid the COVID-19 Quarantine, Presented by Ward McCracken, DO, of NorthShore University Health System’s Orthopedic & Spine Institute

SUMMARY: Recent challenges of caring for active patients is just one more way the COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the medical community. Primary care physicians have been advising patients from a distance on an injury and managing post-operative care using monitoring devices. It has been a new approach for the exercise enthusiast and those enduring rehabilitation. While overall reported orthopedic injuries have been down during the first month of the shutdown, there have been some unusual cases, mainly due to weekend warriors doing new activities at home and hurting themselves in the process.

With exercise being a key element to overall good health, what are the FAQs from patients on staying active amid COVID-19 and what are the best answers? With areas of activity now limited – from the local health club to the park district bike path – how are doctors to encourage their patients to stay active to prevent disease or injury?  The best practices for exercising during COVID-19 will be noted.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1.    Summarize current trends in managing active patients – from telehealth to monitoring devices
2.    Recall Physical Activity Guidelines
3.    List special considerations for active patients at-risk for COVID-19
4.    Cite recommended best practices in exercising during COVID-19
