Obesity affects approximately 70 million Americans. It is a complex metabolic disease that occurs as a result of both our genetic make-up and environmental forces. In simple terms, obesity arises from the consumption of too many calories relative to the amount of energy expended. As a person's Body Mass Index rises above 25, so does the risk of diseases, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and some cancers.
