2018 Tar Wars Poster Contest

Student from Rochester Intermediate wins annual Tar Wars state poster contest for fourth consecutive year

The students at Rochester Intermediate School sure know how to talk tobacco prevention.  This year it’s Ruby Allen who has brought home another statewide honor to her Intermediate school.  The fifth-grader designed the winning poster in the Family Health Foundation of Illinois Tar Wars poster contest, held by the Illinois Academy of Family Physicians Family Health Foundation of Illinois. Ruby’s poster, showing a skunk who declares, “Even I think smoking stinks” received the most votes from the IAFP board members who voted on the posters submitted from schools.   Posters were evaluated on creativity and using a positive, creative message about being smoke-free.

Ruby is the fourth consecutive statewide poster contest winner to come from Rochester Intermediate and the fifth total.  Last year, Calla Phillips took first place. In 2016 Darren Booth won and in 2015 Caleb Hamilton created the state contest winner.  Also, in 2011 Rochester Intermediate student Madelyn Noyes took the top honor. Ruby was honored at a ceremony at school on May 22 and received a cash prize.
