Illinois State Requirements for Health Care Providers Licensed in Illinois

CME Requirements

Physicians in Illinois must earn 150 hours of continuing medical education in a three-year licensure period. Licenses are renewed through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.

Physicians must complete CME in the following topic areas as part of their 150 hours of continuing medical education in a three-year licensure period. The special requirements below count towards the 150 hours of continuing education that is required for licensure renewal.

• Opioid Safe Prescribing (3-hours)
• Sexual Harassment Prevention (1-hour)
• Recognizing Dementia (1-hour)
• Recognizing Implicit Bias in Healthcare (1-hour)

Opioid Safe Prescribing

Professionals with an Illinois Controlled Substance License must complete 3 hours of continuing education on Safe Opioid Prescribing.

Sexual Harassment Prevention

Every licensed professional in Illinois must complete one hour of continuing education in Sexual Harassment Prevention.

Recognizing Implicit Bias in Healthcare

All healthcare professionals with an Illinois license must complete one hour of continuing education in recognizing implicit bias in healthcare. Learn more under Sec. 2105-15.7 here.

Recognizing Dementia

Every licensed healthcare professional with direct interaction with adults ages 26 or older must complete one hour of continuing education in the diagnosis, treatment and care of individuals with Alzheimer’s or other dementias.

Identifying and Reporting Child Abuse
