Illinois Academy of Family Physicians Congratulates New Family Physician Residents in the Match Program

BOLINGBROOK, Ill.-- The Illinois Academy of Family Physicians (IAFP) congratulates the 143 medical school students who matched into family medicine last week. Known as the Match, the National Resident Matching Program® Main Residency Match (NRMP) process aligns graduating and graduated medical students with residency training programs in specialties the students choose.

The IAFP cheered the new data, which represents a significant increase in the total number of Illinois medical school graduates choosing family medicine careers. In 2023, only 111 graduates of Illinois’ allopathic and osteopathic medical schools matched into family medicine. This year’s 32 additional graduates means that 11 percent of students statewide chose family medicine, up from last year’s 8.5 percent.  Link to a chart of Illinois medical schools.

“Thanks to the strong guidance of family medicine faculty on campus and the encouragement of IAFP members who support medical students through mentorship and networking, we are moving more of our Illinois students into family medicine where they are needed and they are valued,” said IAFP President Emma Daisy, MD, who practices at Tapestry360, a federally qualified health center in Chicago. “We still need even more family physicians every year, so our recruiting will continue.”

Family physicians make up most of the primary care physician workforce and closely mirror the geographic distribution of the U.S. population. Family physicians often serve in rural and underserved urban communities, treating a more diverse population of patients than any other medical specialty. As leaders in their communities, family physicians have an important role in raising awareness about health disparities and helping patients access the care and services they need for better health.

“We are hopeful for the future of family medicine in Illinois and across the nation. We salute the medical schools and family medicine residency programs who are committed to creating a rewarding pathway for more family physicians to care for all patients of all ages and all situations in every location. No other physician trains for that,” concludes Gordana Krkic, CAE, IAFP CEO and Chief Advocacy Officer.
