November 2021 Foundation Newsletter

The Foundation Newsletter is a quarterly publication which will keep members informed about the latest philanthropic endeavors and educational and research initiatives supported by The Foundation.

Giving Tuesday is November 30th!

Unleash family medicine’s power this #GivingTuesday by donating to the Family Health Foundation of Illinois. YOU can make a difference in improving the health of patients and communities across Illinois!

As a nonprofit, the Family Health Foundation of Illinois needs donors and fundraising to continue to make a positive impact. YOU can make a real difference in the future of your profession! Donating can also help YOU! There’s proof that giving makes you happier—studies have found that those who gave gifts to others or donated to charity were happier than those who spent their money on items like bills or even gifts for themselves.

Please support the family of family medicine and GIVE TODAY.

IAFP Summer Externships Invest in the Future of Family Medicine

Summer Externships were back in session this year. The Family Health Foundation Summer Externship Experience is supported in part by a matching grant from the AAFP Foundation.  The Foundation is grateful to Illinois Advance for their support which enabled that matching grant.  We’re proud to share the stories of the two 2021 student externships and the preceptors who made it special for them.

Tar Wars Star Awards

Peoria area members and elementary students honored for their dedication to tobacco and nicotine prevention during the pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic kept kids learning at home and disrupted learning in just about every possible way.  As a result, most of the usual Tar Wars presentations didn’t happen in 2020 or 2021, nor did the annual poster contest for either school year.  Despite the obstacles created when schools were closed during COVID-19 pandemic or outside visitors restricted, some dedicated family physicians, medical students and local elementary schools kept the important lessons about tobacco prevention coming for their students.  University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria family physicians and medical students taught Tar Wars virtually at Concordia Lutheran School, St. Mary’s Catholic School, and Peoria Academy.  Students then had the option to design posters about the positives of living tobacco and nicotine free.  Each school selected a poster contest winner both in 2020 and 2021.  Though a bit delayed by the realities of the pandemic, these students are finally receiving recognition for their achievements.

The six students’ winning posters were turned into a billboard which was displayed in Peoria at 1728 Sheridan Rd during the month of July.  The students, their families and the family physicians were able to meet up at the billboard for a photo opportunity on July 19.

Tar Wars is a tobacco and nicotine prevention program from the American Academy of Family Physicians.  The classroom lesson is updated every year to reflect changes in the tobacco industry, including new products such as e-cigarette, vaping devices and more.  Tar Wars has been implemented by the Illinois Academy of Family Physicians’ Family Health Foundation of Illinois since 1999.  For more information visit www.iafp.com/tar-wars.   The curriculum and parent information sheet has been updated for the next school year and is ready for anyone who would like to take Tar Wars to their local schools.  Contact Ginnie Flynn at [email protected] with questions.

Back at the Ballpark

IAFP members turned out for our first in-person event since November 2019 with the 14th Annual "Home Runs for Healthy Families" Fundraiser at the Chicago White Sox game on July 16.  The Sox fell to the Astros 7-1 and only a few raindrops fell on the fans!  The “Rock and Roll Night” theme, including a live band, provided fantastic music all night long and the fireworks show after the game brought back the traditions that make this annual event an IAFP favorite.  The Sox won-loss record is now 10-4 in our 14 total Foundation fundraiser games.

Thank you to the 96 fans who came out, including Foundation Board Member Ronald Rembert, MD who brought his family

and his longtime friend. Thank you to the 96 fans who came out, including Foundation Board Member Ronald Rembert, MD who brought his family and his longtime friend and mentor Theodore Booden, MD, the former dean of Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University in North Chicago. IAFP President Michael Hanak enjoyed a night out with his brother.  Four medical students were able to attend the game for free – along with a guest – thanks to tickets donated by IAFP Co-CEOs Jennifer O’Leary and Gordana Krkic, Foundation board chair Kristin Drynan, MD and (then) AAFP Speaker of the Congress of Delegates Alan Schwartzstein, MD of Wisconsin.

All together the event raised $3180!

Special thanks to our Sox Game Supporters:  Illinois ADVANCE hosted a pre-game social for IAFP fans and HealthCare Associates Credit Union provided a fun giveaway tablet case with their handy travel kit of hand sanitizer, insect repellent and sunscreen.  Special thanks to Aledade for their support, as well!
