Smoking Cessation


NEW - Tobacco Cessation for the Primary Care Provider: A Quality Improvement Initiative **Approved for ABFM MoC Part IV**

The Illinois Academy of Family Physicians and the Illinois Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics are pleased to introduce a new program, entitled Tobacco Cessation for the Primary Care Provider: A Quality Improvement Initiative. Made possible by the Cook County Department of Public Health through funds received from the Illinois Department of Public Health, this program is now available online on ICAAP's Learning Management System. Please note, newcomers to ICAAP's LMS must create a login in order to begin.

First, providers must view the slideshow and successfully pass the CME quiz.

Slideshow Learning Objectives:

Following the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  • Explain the 2As and R
  • Establish a standard plan when asking initial tobacco screening questions
  • Identify the key techniques the provider can use when advising the patient
  • Describe behavioral and pharmacological interventions
  • List direct referrals to resources, including the Illinois Tobacco Quitline, that will assist the smoker with cessation***

After successfully completing the course, you may register for the online Data Collection in order to begin work on the MOC Part IV. The goal of this project is to support providers in implementation of the Brief Tobacco Intervention into daily practice using the below AIMs Statements:

Participating providers will create a system to screen and identify patients at risk from environmental tobacco use, counsel patient on risk, advise the patient to quit, and refer to the Illinois Tobacco Quitline such that:

  • 90% of patients/parents are screened for environmental smoke exposure and second hand smoke exposure/parental tobacco use if pediatric patient.
  • 90% of patients/parents of patients who use tobacco receive counsel on importance of quitting for overall health and the health of children and adults exposed to smoke.
  • 90% of patients/parents of patients who use tobacco or whose environmental tobacco use poses a risk to children will be referred to the Illinois Tobacco Quitline***

In order to successfully complete the Data Collection section of this project, participants must provide their American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) number when prompted.
